"Sorrento Towns" lining the Gulf of Naples

6/16/2012

Along the Peninsula's coast facing the Gulf of Naples, several towns whose names include "Sorrento" receive the visitor coming from the Castellamare di Stabia and Vico Equense direction.

Looking back from where we came from, follow this link to the Gulf of Naples panorama seen from Monte Faito (1,131 meters), which forms part of the Monti Lattari, the backbone of the Sorrento Peninsula.
The Peninsula landscape is dotted with tiny villages, aristocratic villas, sea boroughs, castles and towers, often built in the early Middle Ages for defense against Saracen raids.
The "Sorrento towns" along the coast start with Meta di Sorrento and its beautiful beaches. From Meta, you can go up the Monti Lattari towards the other side of the Coast, the Amalfitana. Click here for a beautiful panoramic photo of the two coasts - i due Golfi,

Meta is followed by Piano di Sorrento and its sailing boats lined up in the harbor,

Finally comes Sorrento, full of lemon gardens, the winding street along the coast is of course lined with olive groves,

... and is leading towards Massa Lubrense and its natural oases, and towards "Land's End" - the Punta Campanella (Campanella is Italian for "bells") tip. Here you can find another torre di avvistamento - the ancient Roman lighthouse that via smoke signs connected with Capri's lighthouse and the Capo Misenum on the other side of the Gulf of Naples. Via light signs, the Roman emperors that spent quite a few years at Capri would communicate all the way back to Rome.
